Psychiatry Services

At OpenMinds, our philosophy around psychiatry is holistic, therapy-first, and slow to prescribe. We believe medication can be a very effective treatment for some children, adolescents, and young adults, but it should be considered in the context of the whole person—their symptoms, development, relationships, family system, school functioning, and broader emotional life. Our goal is never simply to prescribe, but to thoughtfully determine whether medication is appropriate and how it fits into a broader treatment plan.

When medication is recommended, it is introduced carefully and collaboratively, with close attention to benefits, side effects, and overall functioning over time. Research shows that psychiatric medication is often most effective when paired with psychotherapy, and that the strongest outcomes typically come from treatment that combines both. For that reason, we view medication as one tool within a larger, evidence-based process of healing and growth.

Because of this philosophy, OpenMinds offers psychiatry services only to families who are also enrolled or have been in therapy services at OpenMinds. This allows our psychiatric providers and therapists to work closely together, coordinate care, and ensure that treatment remains integrated, responsive, and grounded in long-term progress rather than short-term symptom management alone.
